Heat accelerates decomposition. What sits for seven days in cool conditions is roughly equivalent to what sits for two or three days in mid-summer Northern Colorado weather. Surface bacteria load grows, odor compounds intensify, and the smell becomes noticeable from indoors.

Flies

A single uncleaned pile can produce hundreds of adult flies in seven to ten days. By the time you get home, the yard has a self-sustaining fly population that needs the breeding source removed before it resets. That reset takes two to three weeks even after a thorough cleanup.

Wider Spread

Dogs change their behavior in an uncleaned yard. They start picking favored zones farther from the house and avoid original waste areas. Over a week, the total area needing cleanup is bigger than it would have been with a midweek pickup.

1. Pre-Trip Visit

Schedule within 48 hours of departure. The goal is to leave behind a completely clean yard so the accumulation clock starts at zero. For weekly clients, this is often just confirming your normal visit aligns with the trip. For new clients, this is the visit to book first.

2. Mid-Trip Visit

For trips of four days or longer, schedule at least one visit while you are away. This is the difference between a usable yard and a problem yard when you return. For two-week or longer trips, two mid-trip visits is the right baseline.

3. Sitter Coordination

If your dog is home with a sitter, communicate where the disposal bin is, where you keep extra bags, the day and time of regular scoop service visits, and any health issues that affect waste consistency.

4. Post-Arrival Visit

Schedule within 72 hours of getting home. The first three days back are when the dog is reintroducing itself to the yard — activity is higher, marking is more frequent. This visit catches heavy reentry waste before it sits another week.

One-Week Trip

Pre-trip + one mid-trip + post-arrival visit. Total: $60–$135 depending on dog count and yard size.

Two-Week Trip

Pre-trip + two mid-trip visits + post-arrival visit. Total: $80–$180 depending on dog count and yard size.

Catch-Up Cost (No Service)

A standard one-week catch-up for a yard with two dogs runs $80–$180, plus two to three weeks for fly populations to reset. Prevention is far cheaper.

Dog Travels With You

Pre-trip visit still useful to set a clean baseline. Mid-trip visits can usually be skipped. Post-trip visit catches wildlife debris and resets the cycle.

Pool or Entertainment Areas

If you have outdoor entertaining planned after returning, schedule the post-trip visit two days before the event. The yard needs 24–48 hours after a heavy cleanup to fully resolve residual odor.

Multi-Dog Households

Add one extra mid-trip visit for any trip longer than five days. Waste volume scales nonlinearly with dog count and the catch-up risk is much higher.

Older Dogs With Consistency Issues

Communicate digestive issues to whoever is covering the yard. We can adjust visit cadence and cleanup approach for dogs with loose or frequent waste.

Can the tech come while no one is home?

Yes. The large majority of service visits happen while clients are at work or away. We need yard access — a side gate, a code, or a key arrangement covers it. The dog does not need to be in the yard.

What if my sitter is uncomfortable?

We coordinate. Many sitters appreciate the help with the yard. If the sitter prefers we come on a specific day or time, we accommodate. Communication is the only thing that matters here.

What about smell when I open the back door?

If mid-trip visits happened on schedule, there should be no significant odor when you return. If visits were skipped, expect noticeable smell for the first day or two after the post-arrival cleanup. Full resolution typically takes 24–48 hours.
